Transit Corridors

The Tasmanian Urban Passenger Transport Framework identified the development of transit corridors as one of the key measures to improve public transport use. Transit corridors are key public transport routes that link activity centres to central business districts (CBDs).

Transit corridors must be supported by a range of improvements that enhance the attractiveness and reliability of public transport including: high frequency bus services, bus priority measures, and off-bus infrastructure (such as improved bus waiting facilities and information).

The first Transit Corridor Plan for Greater Hobart has been developed for the high frequency Main Road Corridor between Glenorchy and the Hobart CBD. There are also high frequency corridors from the Hobart CBD to Shoreline shopping centre and from the Launceston CBD to Mowbray, however these corridors do not currently have corridor plans.

Main Road Transit Corridor Plan (Glenorchy to Hobart CBD)

The Main Road Transit Corridor Plan has been developed by the Department of State Growth to improve bus transport on the Main Road Corridor linking Glenorchy to Hobart CBD.

Detailed background information about the Plan’s development is available on this website. The final Main Road Transit Corridor Plan was prepared taking public feedback into account and the Department is currently seeking endorsement of the final Plan from the project partners.

Bus priority and bus stop optimisation projects

One of the key recommendations in the Main Road Transit Corridor Plan is to investigate bus priority and bus stop optimisation measures to improve the reliability of buses travelling between Hobart CBD and Glenorchy on the Main Road Corridor.

The bus priority measures focus on giving buses traffic priority at key intersections and improving general traffic flow in order to reduce bus travel times. Bus stop optimisation focuses on the location of and distances between bus stops along the corridor, and proposes the removal or relocation of some existing bus stops to improve travel time.
