Space

Tasmania’s geographical advantages coupled with its unique space research infrastructure and expertise is set to play a key role in Australia’s ambitions to participate in the human exploration of our solar system.

Tasmania’s capabilities in space domain awareness, spacecraft tracking and communications is globally recognised and is underpinned by the University of Tasmania’s unique continent-wide network of telescope infrastructure. HENSOLDT has established the Southern Guardian System in partnership with University of Tasmania to enable high precision tracking and monitoring of space debris and satellites.

Tasmania is also becoming a centre for human spaceflight training, testing and research. Our state’s expertise in remote and extreme environments, hyperbaric medicine, and Antarctic space-analogue research is unique to Australia. The Tasmanian Government is currently working with industry partners in exploring the commercial development of these capabilities.

Tasmanian technology companies, such as Fortifyedge, Pivot Maritime, Firmus and Black14_Astra are developing a range of technologies to address human spaceflight and space exploration challenges, including astronaut biometrics, space edge-computing, space flight simulators and mission decision support systems.
