Feedback from the expert peers

The peers gave the following feedback to help current and future applicants:

  • The peers encouraged all applicants to read the program guidelines closely and speak to Arts Tasmania staff to make sure the program is the best fit for their proposed activity.
  • As applications are assessed by multi-form panels or artists from diverse backgrounds, applicants should write in the first person, in plain English and avoid unnecessary artform specific language.
  • Applicants should proofread their applications before they submit.
  • Applicants should carefully curate support materials and ensure they are relevant to the project.
  • Applicants were encouraged to take time to connect with their chosen residency site before applying.
  • Stronger applications in this round included:
    • targeted letters of support that spoke about the value of the opportunity for the artist and the impact it would have on their career
    • information about the timeliness of the opportunity (particularly discussing why this opportunity was important and why it was needed)
    • showed a clear connection between the residency location and that artist’s practice.
