Infrastructure Priority List

Infrastructure Tasmania coordinates the Tasmanian Government’s engagement with Infrastructure Australia and its Infrastructure Priority List, as part of its infrastructure investment role, and supports proponents of projects on the Priority List and projects that might be proposed for listing.

The Infrastructure Priority List is a credible pipeline of nationally significant project proposals, that require significant funding from the Australian Government. It incorporates the key stages of project development, from early-stage (Stage 1), potential investment options (Stage 2) to investment-ready proposals (Stage 3).

The assessment process and submission guidelines for proposals seeking listing on the Priority List is provided in Infrastructure Australia’s Assessment Framework . The Assessment Framework is designed to help proponents develop high-quality infrastructure proposals for submission to us. It has been designed to align with national, state and territory frameworks and can be applied to all types of infrastructure in all parts of Australia.

Tasmanian proponents who have a proposal on the Priority List or who are interested in making a submission to have a proposal added and recognised as being of national significance, are encouraged to ensure they are familiar with the Assessment Framework.

Infrastructure Australia’s evaluation of the final business case is required where projects are seeking $250 million or more in Australian Government funding.

Proponents should also contact Infrastructure Tasmania to support them with this process and obtain the Ministerial or Cabinet endorsement needed to make a submission to Infrastructure Australia. Enquiries can be directed to info@stategrowth.tas.gov.au.

The Tasmanian projects currently on the Priority List are:

  • Burnie to Hobart freight corridor improvement
  • Hobart Port precinct capacity improvements
  • Port of Burnie capacity
  • Tasmanian sewerage infrastructure upgrades
  • Tasmanian irrigation schemes (Tranche 3)
  • University of Tasmania, science and technology precinct

The new Bridgewater Bridge and University of Tasmania’s Northern Transformation Program in Launceston are two Tasmanian projects that were graduated off the Infrastructure Priority List because of receiving Australian Government funding.

Infrastructure Australia does not fund infrastructure projects itself. Its role is to assesses infrastructure proposals it receives and provide independent advice to the Australian Government on which proposals represent a nationally significant priority for investment. You can view past evaluations to see what business cases the Infrastructure Australia Board has evaluated and the basis for previous decisions.

Inclusion on the Priority List is not a guarantee of Australian Government funding, but it is an important and credible pathway to testing a proposal’s merit and demonstrating national significance, and potentially securing the funding needed from the Australian Government for delivery.

You can visit the Infrastructure Priority List to find out more about these projects.
