Cradle Coast Integrated Transport Strategy

The development of regional integrated transport plans across Tasmania is a key strategic planning initiative of the State Government. The Plans are developed in partnership with local government and provide an agreed framework for the strategic management of regional transport systems over the longer term.

The State Government and Cradle Coast Authority, on behalf of the nine local councils in the Cradle Coast Region, released the Cradle Coast Integrated Transport Strategy in 2006 after extensive stakeholder consultation.

The Cradle Coast Region is situated on the North West and West Coast of Tasmania and comprises the nine local government areas of Burnie City, Central Coast, Circular Head, Devonport City, Kentish, King Island, Latrobe, Waratah-Wynyard and West Coast Councils.

The transport system is critical to this Region, which has a strong resources (mining, forestry and agriculture) and manufacturing base, a growing tourism industry and a dispersed settlement pattern that includes a number of rural and remote towns and communities. Safe and efficient transport services are key to ensuring producers are able to access intrastate and interstate markets, and that individuals can access essential services and participate in their communities.

The Strategy provides a coordinated and strategic framework to address transport issues in the region over the next 20 years, and identifies objectives and outcomes to be achieved.
