Hobart City Deal

Derwent River Ferry Service

Delivering on a commitment under the Hobart City Deal, phase one of the Derwent River ferry trial between Bellerive and Hobart proved successful with over 110 000 trips over the 12-month trial period. Given the success of the trial, an additional $19 million over four years has been committed by the Tasmanian government to fund the continuation of the trial, an ongoing service for three years and to provide appropriate infrastructure to support the service.

The service has been free during the first year of the trial for passengers with a Greencard, bicycle or e-scooter.  On 8 August 2022, the trial enters its second year with the introduction of a fare which will be equivalent to that of a Metro Tasmania bus fare. The same Greencard system that is used on buses will be implemented on the Ferry service and will help assess its viability as a public transport option in the longer-term.
