Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions

Our emissions reduction target

In response to the latest independent review of Tasmania’s climate change legislation, the Tasmanian Government has legislated a new emissions reduction target for Tasmania of net zero emissions, or lower, from 2030.

What is the government doing?

Monitoring emissions

As the state’s biggest employer, the Tasmanian Government is leading by example to understand and manage its greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.

We use emissions reporting software to generate a wide range of reports, from high-level overviews to detailed spreadsheets. These reports show energy and fuel-use trends and help identify ways to achieve savings. Reducing emissions can increase our energy productivity and reduce operational costs, making more funds available for delivery of essential government services.

Transport

Transport is a significant source of Tasmania’s greenhouse gas emissions. Vehicle fleet costs are a major expense for the Tasmanian Government, local government, private sector fleets and the community.

Actions to reduce transport emissions:

  • e-Transport support
  • Electric Vehicle Working Group
  • Improving fleet efficiency through the Smarter Fleets program
  • Electric Vehicle ChargeSmart Grants Program
  • Committing to transition the government fleet to 100 per cent electric vehicles by 2030
  • Waiving stamp duty on electric vehicles for two years (ceased 30 June 2023, extended to 31 December 2023 for those vehicles contracted to purchase before 25 May 2023)
  • Waiving registration fees on electric vehicles for hire car companies (ceased 30 June 2023)
  • Investing in Metro Tasmania to trial an electric bus in the North and supporting a hydrogen bus trial in the south of the state

Agriculture

Low Emissions Livestock Grants program

Applications are now open for the Low Emissions Livestock Grants program. The program will support one or more large-scale trials of feed supplements to demonstrate how feed supplements can reduce emissions from livestock, and the benefits of low emissions feed supplements for Tasmania’s agriculture sector.

Business support

Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans

The Tasmanian Government is developing sector-based Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans, in consultation with business, industry and the community. The Plans will be specific to Tasmania, and consider how government can support emissions reductions and build resilience to climate-related risks.

Business Resource Efficiency Program

The program aimed to help Tasmanian businesses review their resource use and find ways to improve it.

Learn more about the Business Resource Efficiency Program

Concluding in September 2023, the second Business Resource Efficiency Program worked with 14 small- to medium-sized Tasmanian businesses to reduce the amount of waste they produce. Each business received a comprehensive waste audit, and worked with other program participants to develop plans to reduce waste.
