Office of the Coordinator-General

Defence

Tasmania has many competitive advantages to offer the domestic and international defence and security arena. Tasmanian manufacturing and support service companies, as well as Tasmania’s training and research institutes, such as UTAS’s AMC, are globally renowned, competitive, defence ready and able to support major defence activities now and in the future. Tasmania is also Australia’s leading provider of maritime education and training across its tertiary and vocational education sectors. Tasmania’s defence industry is complemented by an additional cohort of businesses with the capability and willingness to become defence ready.

The Tasmanian Government can offer a genuine, long term, strategic partnership with industry and primes to deliver on defence programs. The Tasmanian Defence Industry Strategy 2023 targets four defence priority areas including, specialised watercraft, maritime products and advanced services; specialised support vehicle and component production; nutrition and food sciences; and innovative and technologically advanced systems. The Government has committed to funding the development of a Defence and Maritime Innovation and Design Precinct at the UTAS Campus in the North of the State. This precinct will foster maritime-specific solutions as well as a broad range of science and technology capabilities, drawing academics from across the country to support Defence Science and Technology.
