Advanced manufacturing

The Tasmanian Government proudly supports manufacturing in the state. The ingenuity that comes with Tasmania being an island state drives innovation, with local manufacturers able to turn their hand to a variety of tasks and products, and to find solutions to difficult problems. This has become a defining characteristic of the Tasmanian sector and a strength in a competitive marketplace that is increasingly looking for responsive contributors in complex supply chains.

The Tasmanian Advanced Manufacturing Action Plan 2024 provides a framework of actions that the Tasmanian Government will undertake to provide support to the state’s advanced manufacturing sector to enable the industry to grow its capability and to become more successful and sustainable.
Advanced manufacturers operate across all the state’s manufacturing subsectors including food and beverage processing, smart technologies, forestry, maritime, mining equipment technology and services, renewable energy, transport equipment and the defence industry.

Tasmania’s advanced manufacturing industries have particular capabilities in the fields of marine and mining, mineral processing and heavy industry. Specifically, the state’s capabilities include metal manufacturing, casting, ship-building and related maritime products, specialised machinery manufacturing and engineering that produces a diverse range of products.

There is potential for investment in transitioning to low-volume, high value-added advanced manufacturing activities, particularly in the defence, oil and gas industries and in activities that leverage Tasmania’s already highly established sectors such as marine, aquaculture and renewable energy.
