Tasman Bridge upgrades announced

The Tasman Bridge is set to undergo its first major upgrade since it was repaired following the Lake Illawara disaster in 1975. $65 million has been committed to this project through the Urban Congestion Fund.

Carrying around 70 000 vehicles a day the Tasman Bridge provides a critical link between eastern and western Hobart as well as to the Hobart International Airport and regional areas.

The project will include strengthening work, widened pathways and improved barriers, and gantry and lighting upgrades.

Gantry upgrades will support efficient maintenance of the bridge and the ongoing feature lighting of the arches at night.

Development and procurement is scheduled to begin in 2021 and the project will be implemented in stages with an anticipated end date of 2023-24.

This project will complement other major projects aimed at improving infrastructure in the Greater Hobart region including the South East Traffic Solution and Hobart City Deal.
