Department of State Growth

Devonport City Abattoir

JBS has advised the State Government of its intention to permanently cease being the operator of its Devonport City Abattoir on 15 November 2018. JBS is now working with the government around options for a potential third-party to operate the Devonport pig line post the closure by JBS. This will allow government, together with the pig industry, to work through and explore future long term and transition arrangements. The government is also aware of the potential impact on the service kill sector and is seeking to understand the demand for this service, and the options that exist to support continuation of processing on island.

A central contact register for affected businesses has been established. Any businesses affected by the JBS announcement about Devonport City Abattoir should call the Business Tasmania Service on phone 1800 440 026 to be added to the register or if they have any concerns or need further information.

The Government has had productive discussions with industry and other service providers and a number of other abattoir facilities having come forward to offer their services to the industry.
