In January 2016, Infrastructure Tasmania (ITas) released an advisory report, analysing a light rail service for Hobart.
The report concluded that over the short to medium term, a light rail service would require significant operational subsidies and a significant passenger uplift in order to be viable. It recommended further work be undertaken to understand supportive land use planning and development measures.
Glenorchy City Council and Hobart City Council are progressing work regarding requirements for activation of the rail corridor.
ITas recommended the existing rail line be retained for passenger transport purposes, and the Tasmanian Government remains committed to that outcome.
