Bridgewater bridge replacement

The Bridgewater Bridge is a critical part of the transport and freight link between the northern and southern regions of Tasmania, and is part of the National Land Transport Network jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments.

The current Bridgewater Bridge is reaching the end of its serviceable life and does not meet contemporary loading and design standards of the National Land Transport Network.

In March 2016, Infrastructure Tasmania published its review of a design and cost estimate for the construction of a replacement structure for the existing Bridgewater Bridge, which considered various options for a replacement structure and provided advice as to the most feasible crossing solution.

Next steps

A business case for a new Bridgewater Bridge is currently being finalised and will be submitted for assessment to both Infrastructure Australia and the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development as the major funding agency, with a view to secure Federal funding to allow for Bridge works to commence in 2020-21.
