Project Marinus and Battery of the Nation

The Tasmanian Government is advancing the case for additional Bass Strait electricity interconnection and the role Tasmania can play by providing reliability and firming services to Australia as its energy market transitions to a lower emissions basis.

Project Marinus is a major assessment of potential new Bass Strait interconnection – Marinus Link. More information on Project Marinus is available here.

Battery of the Nation is a suite of projects being developed by Hydro Tasmania to examine how Tasmania’s hydroelectric power system can be redeployed and augmented with pumped hydro energy storage to meet the needs of the transitioning national power system. More information on Battery of the Nation is available here.

The Tasmanian Government has released a Current Situation Assessment paper in relation to Marinus Link and Battery of the Nation. The Situation Assessment takes into account a range of recent publications on Australia’s energy future and Tasmania’s role in it, including Project Marinus’s Initial Feasibility Report, Hydro Tasmania’s Analysis of the Future National Electricity Market and the work of the COAG Energy Council and national market bodies including the inaugural Integrated System Plan.
