Fujian Province and Tasmania

40th anniversary of the Tasmania-Fujian sister state relationship

This year, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Tasmania-Fujian sister state relationship.  This is an important relationship of which Tasmania is very proud and one that has been part of the foundation for the development of Australia’s relationship with China more broadly.

The sister state relationship was established in March 1981 and acknowledged the great potential between Tasmania and Fujian for cultural and economic engagement. Now, four decades on, the range of projects and activities supporting this milestone anniversary clearly demonstrate that this potential has been realised.  We are close partners with shared interests.  Our relationship was strengthened even further in late 2014 with the visit of President Xi Jinping to Hobart, realising an ambition of President Xi to visit the State since he was Governor of Fujian Province from 1999 to 2002.

Tasmanians and Fujianese apply a resourcefulness and creativity to their business and artistic endeavours which will continue to deliver benefits across the next phase of the partnership.

Tasmania looks forward to a continuing engagement with Fujian.

Fujian Governor His Excellency Wang Ning has recorded a special video message to mark the anniversary.
