The TMAG Board is a body corporate and an instrumentality of the Crown, as detailed in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Act 2017 (the Act).

The Board's strategic functions and powers are detailed in sections 8 and 9 of the Act.

Section 7(3) of the Act states that collectively, members are to have qualifications or experience in, or expert knowledge of, most of the matters listed below:

  • Tasmanian history and cultural heritage, including Aboriginal cultural heritage
  • natural science
  • business or financial management
  • commercial or corporate law
  • marketing or fundraising
  • public sector administration
  • community representation and education.

The Act also requires the Board to have at least one member who can appropriately represent the interests of the Tasmanian community.

Expressions of interest will be assessed against these criteria.

Applications are encouraged from people with experience across a range of areas including capital projects, public private partnerships, commercial operations, natural science and philanthropic activities, including from people with strong research and collections experience.

Candidates are expected to have strong governance and strategic thinking skills with prior board or committee experience.

In accordance with the State Government's Women on Boards Strategy 2020-2025, women are strongly encouraged to apply.
