The Tasmanian Government has assumed a caretaker role ahead of the election for the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It is important during this time that Tasmanian Government resources are not used to communicate political material. As such, no political or election material will be placed on this site.

Tasmanian Drive Journeys

The Tasmanian Drive Journeys are a suite of five self-drive touring holidays that encourage locals and visitors to explore regional Tasmania.

The journeys include an evolved Great Eastern Drive, the Western Wilds launched in late 2018, and three new Journeys – Southern Edge, Northern Forage, and Heartlands. More information about each journey can be found at www.discovertasmania.com.au/journeys

Driving experiences are one of the priorities identified in the Tasmanian Visitor Engagement Strategy. In addition, Drive Holidays and Tassie Road Trips are identified as a way to assist in rebuilding visitation, a key priority of the T21 Visitor Economy Action Plan 2020-22.

In the short term, the journeys will provide a new way for Tasmanians to explore their home state. In the longer term, the network will be a key tool in promoting Tasmania as a leading global self-drive touring destination.

The Tasmanian Journeys Project has been delivered through a partnership between the Department of State Growth and Tourism Tasmania, in collaboration with the state's Regional Tourism Organisations.

An evolved Great Eastern Drive

Since its launch in 2015, the Great Eastern Drive has contributed to an increase in visitation to Tasmania’s east coast. Continued development of the Great Eastern Drive formed part of the Journeys Project and resulted in a new look and feel (visual identity), an extension of the journey’s ‘footprint’, and updated road signage.

Ongoing development of the Great Eastern Drive and the evolution of its core elements will ensure its longevity because it will be more aligned to the other journeys and current target markets.

An industry consultation process was undertaken in relation to evolving the Great Eastern Drive between February and April 2020.

This process was done with consideration to the COVID-19 situation and implications, with the subsequent report detailing the findings and insights from the consultation activities.

Other ways to undertake self-drive touring in Tasmania

The journeys are one tool that Tourism Tasmania uses to promote self-drive touring in Tasmania. A range of Experience Trails such as the Convict Trail, Tamar Valley Wine Route and the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail are also profiled on https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/what-to-do/road-trips and contribute to the holistic self-drive touring experience available in Tasmania.
