Register your business

To register your business, there are a few steps to take. Before any formalities happen, you will need to have decided on the business structure that best suits your needs. You will need to start by getting an Australian Business Number (ABN). This can be done quickly online, make sure you have your Tax File Number handy.

As a general rule, you will need a business name if you trade under a name other than your own. Make sure your chosen name is available.

Register for your ABN and business name at the same time on the Business Registration Service (BRS). Registering a business name will prevent others from registering the exact business name, but not from trading with a similar business name or likeness. For that, you’ll need to register a trade mark. You can also check whether a trade mark might be granted by using the new, free tool TM Checker. If you see that your proposed trade mark is available, you can then apply for 10 year protection in Australia for as little as $330.

GST and tax

There are many tax and GST implications to understand when starting a new business. The ATO has a comprehensive guide to what you need to understand on their website. Of course it is important to seek your own independent financial advice when getting started to make sure you are across all the latest tools and requirements.

Website domain name

Now is also a good time to ensure that you are able to secure the domain name that most closely matches your business. Check if your preferred domain name is available here. Then choose one of the auDA accredited Registrars to register the name.

It is essential to have a website, and to help your customers find you easily, your domain name needs to align with your business name and brand. It is best to do these activities together, along with securing any social media real estate such as your brand or business name on Instagram, Facebook for business, Linkedin and Pinterest.
