Business Tasmania

Starting a business

Tasmania is a dynamic place to get your business idea out of your head and up and running. We are an island of entrepreneurs, with 97% of our business population made up of small businesses and the highest business survival rate in the country (source: Interim Business Growth Strategy December 2021).

Tasmania’s Business Growth Strategy 2019-23 was released in early 2019 following extensive consultation with the Tasmanian business community. Much has changed since 2019 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In light of this, and in partnership with the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Tasmanian Small Business Council, a refresh of the Business Growth Strategy was undertaken in October 2021. The refresh aims to reflect the current and short-term future operating environment for businesses operating in Tasmania.

The development of a new Strategy is planned for the second quarter of 2022.  This will provide sufficient time, following the reopening of Tasmania’s border in December 2021, for businesses to have adjusted to the impact of COVID-19 on operations and the steps required to protect the health and well-being of our community.

The Department will continue to engage with key stakeholder groups to ensure the next version of the Strategy identifies the priorities that build the foundation for a thriving business sector.
