Awards and prizes

Burnie Print Prize
Open to artists living and working in Australia, it is an initiative of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery. Offering a prize pool of $22,000, including a major acquisitive award of $16,000.

Glover Prize
The richest landscape prize in Tasmania, it is awarded each year for the best contemporary landscape painting of Tasmania. The winner receives $75,000 and a bronze maquette of John Glover valued at $5,000.

Tidal - City of Devonport Art Award
Hosted by the paranaple arts centre and funded by the City of Devonport, the major acquisitive award is valued at $20,000. The People’s Choice Award is announced at the close of the exhibition and the artist will receive $1,000, courtesy of One Agency Collins Real Estate.

The Fremantle Print Award
The longest running and largest print prize in the country.

Head On Photography Award
A photographic portrait competition and exhibition, reflecting a vibrant and diverse cross-section of new and traditional photographic practices.

The R and M McGivern Prize
Promotes artistic excellence in watercolour, oil and acrylic painting. The prize is awarded every three years with prize money totalling $26,000.

Sculpture by the Sea
One of Australia’s largest annual, outdoor, free-to-the public art exhibitions, held along a coastal walk from Bondi, Sydney.

Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award
A significant award which aims to showcase the very best Australian Indigenous art from around the country. The major prize is valued at $100,000 with a minor prize pool of $90,000.

Australia Council for the Arts - indigenous protocols
The Australia Council has developed protocols for educate readers and users on Indigenous Australian cultural heritage, and encourage meaningful collaborations with First Nations artists and creators.

Australian Print Workshop
A not-for-profit organisation providing both established and emerging artists with access to a range of printmaking equipment and expertise in the context of a world-class printmaking workshop.

Creative Spaces
Helps artists to find suitable and affordable space in Victoria to develop, exhibit or perform their work. It lists spaces to hire, lease, share or occupy for a short period of time, and case studies on spaces that have been transformed from their normal function into locations for arts projects.

Membership organisations and peak bodies

Art Education Australia
A membership organisation for art educators, researchers, students and others working in the field of visual arts education.

Australia Council for the Arts
The Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body. It offers grants and initiatives in all major areas of arts practice.

The Australian Network for Art and Technology
Australia’s leading cultural organisation working at the intersection of art, science and technology, including networked and emergent art practices, experimental music and sound arts, and mobile and portable platforms.

Contemporary Art Tasmania
A not-for-profit, membership-based organisation focused on the support and development of professional visual artists practising innovative and experimental art in Tasmania.

National Association for the Visual Arts
Professional membership offers visual artists, craft or design practitioners insurance for public liability, products liability, professional indemnity extension, tenant’s liability and property in custody or control, all in one package.

National Exhibitions Touring Support
A national network of independent arts organisations committed to promoting and presenting contemporary art, craft and design through touring exhibitions.

Salamanca Arts Centre
A non-profit, self-supporting arts centre with a mission to develop and promote the arts in Tasmania through leadership, inspiration, creativity and excellence in arts development, programs and facilities.

Opportunities

Artbank
The largest buyer of contemporary Australian art in the country has over 10 000 contemporary artworks for rental.

Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art
The Queensland Art Gallery’s flagship international contemporary art event.

Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)
Melbourne’s leading contemporary art gallery. ACCA exhibits work by living artists from around the world and is the only major public art gallery in Australia focused on commissioning rather than collecting.

Biennale of Sydney
Held in Sydney’s leading museums and galleries, this is renowned for showcasing the freshest, most innovative contemporary art from Australia and the world.

Burnie Regional Art Gallery
Offers a program of exhibitions and artist talks throughout the year.

Devonport Regional Art Gallery
Offers an annual program consisting of exhibitions, workshops and events.

Hunter Island Press
A not-for-profit membership-based organisation with the primary objective of establishing and operating a professional public-access print studio in Hobart. The studio provides a place for artists to create work and pass on skills to the community.

Constance ARI
Constance is an artist-run initiative (ARI) based in Hobart, Tasmania. It aims to foster relationships between artists, audiences, critics, curators, dealers, writers and other ARIs.

Kickstart Arts
Produces community focused arts projects that link art and cultural issues with other sectors, such as industry, welfare, health, education and science. Kickstart has a number of projects spanning across artforms that offer opportunities for all areas of the theatre and performance sector.

Melbourne Art Fair
One of the largest biennial art fairs in the Asia Pacific region and one of Australia’s most significant exhibitions of contemporary visual art.

Moonah Arts Centre
Offers a rich program of workshops, events and exhibitions throughout the year, with an annual program open to submissions of proposals from the public.

Next Wave
A biennial festival and development cycle dedicated to developing and presenting innovative work by young Australian artists. It spans all art forms and encourages interdisciplinary practice.

Plimsoll Gallery
Showcases innovative local, national and international contemporary art and design.

Punctum Arts
A practice led and artist centred live arts organisation.

Sawtooth Artist Run Initiative
A Launceston-based contemporary art space that promotes emerging arts practice from the region, and presents exciting and dynamic arts projects to the north of the state.

The Academy Gallery
Based in Launceston, its program includes international exhibitions and exhibitions by established and emerging Australian artists, craftspeople and designers.

The Rosny Barn and Schoolhouse Gallery
Supports local, national and international artists through its exhibition program, which is open for submissions in August each year.
